Words

Junior Mboweni

Sticks and stones will break my bone

But words alone have fractured souls

Words, a thousand pictures

A thousand cuts and sores

Death by sword

A deafening cry of an infant

Read in an instant

Like a tempest temper

Words that tore out atria

Words that brought light

Words that brought life

Words that divided day from night

Words that gave the hopeless might

Words to arouse

Words to harken

Words that roused hellbound men to war again

Words meant and unmeant

Words that explain

Words we lament

Words that say a lot and nothing at all

  • Comment from author about the poem: I think sometimes, at our lowest, we focus on the things that cripple us the most and it isn't something we can control at times. But the more we process the negative and feel it we're freeing ourselves from it like a song that's stuck in your head that's suddenly forgotten after weeks of repetition.

        'Words that tore out atria

        Words that brought light
        Words that brought life

        Words to arouse'
        Amen!
and Poet's who deliver these words
        accessibly succinct
        and
        illuminatingly, sincere
        are
        what we need, to unveil
        life's
        cyclical trappings of inherited
        circumstance..
        Poet's, like you!
