this old upturned boat

dusk arising

Come, lean against my old boards,
                        rest a while.
Tell me, if you will, a story or two
                        from your life's reward.
Ease that lightness of wisdom
                        upon your shoulders
and wryly smile with me
                        at life's adventure so far.

no need to recall the harshness
which makes the cushion all the softer
the softness says it all
what need to show off scars
love speaks of scars learning
                        to the 'lived in' ear.
Come, lean against my old boards,
                        rest a while.

  • Fay Slimm.

I am so inspired by your use of personification and the invitation seems like an old romance of days gone by but being lived again. A favourite for me and which brought tears to my eyes Dusk.

Ah yes i see what you mean, but is harmlessly meant as an invite to anyone who has travelled lifes path and could use a space and some peace of mind.

As I read this poem aloud it evoked such a feeling of peace and comfort. Lay down your load, linger awhile, remember and smile. Beautiful!

The image is so perfect, that of old boards. The metaphor of a boat turned over and rest is magnificent. The very timing is evocative of peace. The weathered board tell of so much experience. This is a wonderful piece.
