While Drowning off Padliegh Hill
I doubt,
after all this time, you will ever
understand
just how insignificant I then felt
or quite simply
terribly overshadowed and small
Smaller even
and less important than that old
gilt framed
knot tying achievement award
that still sits
to the right-hand side of my now
late great
grandfather’s old writing desk ..
Which for some
reason, I was reminded of while
drowning and
desperately trying to crawl out
through some
rich kids rigid red plastic tube ..
Invariably stolen
from the playground of some
local school
which had been thrown in the
deep end of a
swimming pool off Padliegh Hill ..

Oh my Nev, when I was turning five I too had a drowning experience in the river that ran through my grandparent's property in my mum's hometown. After having been fished out, pumped of water and sufficiently revived I returned early next morning on the shallow end to conquer my fear, to get back on the proverbial saddle. Quite a resonant poem for myself. Thanks for sharing your poem and memory. It takes courage and mental fortitude to accomplish even that!
Ha .. wot are we like eh' .. like two poets in a pod .. Thank you my friend & truly ........ N
Flashbacks can shock even after long passage of time - - insignificance can feel like sinking in water and no achievement award can alter the resultant years of coping with smallness - -- I know the feeling Nev. - a haunt of a write to read................x
Your deep understanding means everything, .............. well maybe .. and my subsequent thank you .. if not considered too shallow, is the gift I sincerely return to thee .. x
Those flashbacks in our lives can bring both good and bad memories Neville.
Andy
Absolutely Andy ....... N
Well, glad your survived the ordeal…
the truth behind this rather convoluted scribble is stranger than most imaginations might imagine .. bless you for diving in & your subsequent perusal 🙂 x
