The Closure of an Envelope

Lord Montgomery

I choose to write now for memory

For the gifts and for treasured words, ideally lasting a while

The words so genuinely heartfelt

I long to leave their intended readers with a smile

I hope they find this little piece of me

With all its intended humour, nuance, and sincerity

But as I part ways with them and this chapter of my life closes

So too does the envelope so important

Yet some see it as worthless.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This is a poem to go in tandem with my previous poem Greeting Cards, Its much shorter but looks at similar ideas of writing as a form of gift giving. I do hope you enjoy it and read my other poem as well as it compliments this one really nicely.

Some things todays are seen as 'fogey' (old fashioned) - letter-writing, though I do that quite often; fax machines without new technology added to them - the ones that don't make cups of tea! lol.
I got a strange look in a shop, asking for videos. It seems they went out centuries ago! lol.
But - in remake of some films, for example, the re-make is never as good as the original.

Absolutely, I know people who don't know how to address a letter, but is it a redundant skill?

I suppose people still write 'letters' sort of, even if by e-mail messages.
Note to self: 'Engage brain before sealing envelope; put letter in envelope first' Well, it helps! lol.

Erm, I closed an envelope, and wondered why the person did not reply to me. I had forgot to put the letter in. Doh! lol.
