Her voice sends shivers down my spine,
This lady of music,
With a voice so pure that is stirs my soul.
Her life was filled with music
That she shared with all,
Until that day,
That day when she sang Mahler,
And never performed again.
Her retirement was unknown
Until that night,
When she walked off the stage
Never to sing for us again.
But her voice is there forever,
As it sails through the ether,
Still stirring my soul
Into absolute joy.

a rare talent indeed .. although until just now, I must confess I had not heard of her .. Neville
So true Neville. When she stopped singing she had not told anyone and sang her last song, a Mahler one, and then retired from her career. A wonderful lady.

A fine write Gold.
This could be something that you could write about orchi! \"Where You There?\" https://youtu.be/T4Qa4YUakq8 She does have some pipes on her and wouldn\'t put it past her work and presence to have been graced by one or more of her performances over the years!
Boo hoo, Gold wants me to be 'there', but over the hills and very far away. When I sing, that is! lol.
And the further away the better Orchi. LOL
Oh getting somewhat esoteric here:
And your musical knowledge knows no
peer for me: something you clearly hold dear -
Please continue to educate me so.
Thank you Dave.
I have been listening to music for over seventy years and I realise that the more I get to know about music the more ignorant about it I am.

Goes for just about everything, Andy. Thanks for your good humour.
She must have been to have left such an imprint. Now the search begins, to scour the net of her work and art. Then I too may return and be inspired to produce a spark of sorts in poetry.
She certainly did Rik, I have a great deal of her work, she is sensational.
Here is one of her performances:

Wow! Edward Elgar! Superb!
I did not know Janet Baker so I went to YouTube and watched as she sang "Dido's lament" from a 1966 performance of Dido & Aeneas, and I saw the magic there. Her portrayal was breathtaking as was her voice. Thank you so much for sharing this treasure!
My absolute pleasure Bella, she was a wonderful singer.
Have a listen to this:

I listened to your recommendation and thoroughly enjoyed it. What an incredible and beautiful instrument the human voice is. You had to linger on her every note. Thank you.
My pleasure Bella.
