City of Strangers

Harlene

Why do I have to pretend to be happy why can’t I just be happy

A stitched on smile

One needle in

Bleeding out the sides of my mouth.

Same needle out

Red string threaded through an open wound.

Repeat these steps

Finish the right now the left

Graveyard face. Looking at me through the mirror

The rituals complete

Gods perfect liar

    Too good to be true

Everyone wants us to show a face, not necessarily our truthful one. Really nice poem.

  • Rocky Lagou

Wow this is so relatable. Living in a dysfunctional family I can totally see myself in this piece. That last line is cathartic, "Gods perfect liar."

  • Sharan

    Powerful and poignant.
