Promises Preserved

Tune: Binchester

('Happy are they, they that love God')

Galatians 3 v.15-18

*********

If people do make covenant

'Tis set with firm intent

If confirmed, no one disannuls

It, nor adds, no loopholes

To Abraham and descendant

Promises were made, sent

By God to one, not to many

Christ the descendant be

The covenant was confirmed sure

Of God in Christ, [and] the law

Four hundred and forty years thence

Cancels not promise hence

The law does not make promises

Of no effect, their sense

And worth they ever do retain

Inheritance we gain

For if inheritance of law

Be, it promise no more

But God gave it to Abraham

We saved though Christ the Lamb [of God]

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. format. St Paul explaining how God gave promises to Abraham, and so to the Jews, and the Gentiles (i.e. everybody else). He shows have we are saved through Christ, a descendant (or 'seed') of Abraham, and that we cannot be saved by law-keeping, or just by 'being good'.

The expression of Covenant is now assigned to this generation. "How is it coming along?" It may be queried.

Thanks CB. I don't quite follow! Explaining a little, please!

Like the Joshua generation receiving its refresher course in the Living Covenant as did the Nehemiah generation, and closer still, John the baptiser’s generation also had a Covenant expression which to us currently is Christ returning with great anticipation.
