Turtle On A Brick

Bella Shepard

As I walked an early summer morn

I spied a turtle quite forlorn

At least I thought he looked that way

On second thought, I could not say

For there he sat upon a brick

Six inches high, six inches thick

‘Twas a border ‘round a mailbox

How did he climb up on those rocks

He simply sat and caused me wonder

What in his turtle mind he’d ponder

Thoughts of what he’d do today

Or just a place to think and pray

What does a turtle contemplate?

His world, his life, his turtle fate

Does he have dreams of turtle love

Or think about the stars above

And as I gazed at vacant eyes

I began to realize

That what to him must seem unclear

Is how he might get down from here

Thank you dear friend for your kind words, it was fun to play with.

Smiling big here Bella at your lightly perceptive poem so beautifully rhymed on a turtle's high-climb without knowing why - - and am in love your final stanza -- great fun read.

thank you dear friend, I always love your comments. I spied this little guy earlier this summer and couldn't believe my eyes. Fortunately he wasn't there the next day, so I assume he got down some how.

Great little read,. Bella - moves along much faster than your turtle. My ever literal brain would suggest that some rotten lout put him there, and then later another compassionate soul helped him down....

I kind of thought the same thing, because next morning he wasn't there. Thank you my friend for reading, I always enjoy your witty comments!

The rainy day changes the scenario in my head: he may have been thinking to get himself a higher vantage point to survey the distance he yet has to travel after the last drops of rain 🌧 🐢 🤓

I quite possibly wasn't giving him enough credit. Your point well taken, never judge a turtle by his shell, there may be more going on in there than meets the eye. Thank you for reading my little poem, it is always appreciated.

Good words Bella, left me wondering how he would get down.

You raise an interesting point. I googled "can turtles climb", and to my amazement I found that some could. He was just an ordinary box turtle. For the life of me, I couldn't figure out he got up there. It was a straight climb up and a rather narrow surface once he got there. I looked again next morning and he was gone, just wish I could have seen him climb down. Thank you for reading and commenting, always fun to share!

            love this!
            allegorical at its nucleus core
            wonderfully worded and paced;
            I just about stopped myself
            from trying to poetically reply
            and ruin it for everyone
            lol
Thanks for this wonderful read, dear Poet

Thank you dear friend. I always love your replies in all their forms. As I thought more about it, I could picture myself as that turtle at different times of my life; getting into a situation without thinking, and then how to remediate. I guess we've all been there at times.

Made me chuckle no end .. Every single verse a little masterpiece building on its predecessor & culminating in the 64-billion-dollar question ... maybe he could hitch a ride on the back of a turtle dove 🙂

              • Bella Shepard

Thank you dear Neville for your insightful solution to the turtles predicament, it just makes me smile. I appreciate your oh so kind comments. Next morning he was gone, so maybe he did hitch a ride and is living his happy, peaceful turtle life. Sure hope so.

Bella I love the way you present this story and dilema. Not only were the rhyme and story compelling but the metaphor of how we all get ourselves into situations that give pause to others as well as ourselves. Loved it.

Thank you my dear friend for your so kind comment. I remember many times when I've been the turtle, hopefully a little wiser with age now..

Cooee Bella! lol. You online? I just popped in!

I am online, and thank you for your so nice comment. He was a brave little turtle, just not maybe too smart. I expect he was just showing off.
