Tree

sorenbarrett

If I were ever asked what a friend should be

I think that I would say a tree

Whether the weather is foul or fair

You know that a tree will always be there

It will shade you from the summer heat

When hungry, it will give you something to eat

It filters your water and gives you air to breathe

It seeds the clouds, carbon from the atmosphere it does retrieve

It gives you shelter and medicine

It never asks where you have been

It doesn't speak or argue

It will never be rude or hurt you

Winter, spring, summer or fall

In return for what it gives it asks nothing at all

It doesn't bark or claw or cost a fortune at the vet or grocery store, and shall we ever "never see a poem as lovely as a tree;" my agreement wholly given my friend to thee.

Thank you so much, crypticbard I appreciate your comment. I have a bonsai that is over sixty years old and I thought that it was time to show it some appreciation as well as its brothers.

    • arqios

Nice. My bonsai are long gone, to much a vagabond and the lack of a homebase didn't help.

This one hits me where I live, literally. My home is pretty much surrounded by tall trees, and my morning walk is through tree lined roads. I've hugged a lot of trees on vacation, and go outside to say goodnight before bedtime. So for me, you couldn't have chosen a better or more beautiful subject. We see them and we take them for granted. Thank you dear poet for extolling all of their virtues, for without them we would not live. This such a fav!

Thank you so much Bella I deeply appreciate your review and comment. I too have loved trees since a child. Whether building tree houses in them, camping and hiking through them or planting many of them around where I live they are good friends.

You'ver just about covered it all, Soren. in the urban setting where I live, a combination of local councils, electricity suppliers (overhead power lines)and some residents who seem threatened by anything taller than themselves (trees are triffids or wot?) mean vigilance and the willingness to speak up are always necessary.

        • sorenbarrett

Thank you Doggerel Dave for your review and welcome words. I have made sure to fill the land around my house with trees Three old oaks, and fourteen types of palm trees. (yea I know palms are grass not trees but they do look like trees.)

Thank you Goldfinch for your review and comment

A fine write S. Let's go hug trees!

            • sorenbarrett

Thank you orchidee for your review and comment. The only time I really hug trees is when I'm afraid I'm going to fall out of them. I do love them though.

I have always found trees to be calming
knowing how many, stood and reached their fingers, to feel
              that connection
thereby surpassing our finite perspective of life,
and so your image of tree as friend resonates with me..
              a wonderful read, thank you

Thank you L.B. I deeply appreciate your words my friend.
