TROLLED

Andy Hunter

She volunteered at a local charity, which was featured in the news

Her story in the local paper received many positive reviews

To raise awareness for her charity, she shared this on the net

Her best intentions to support her cause she would sadly soon regret

Nasty messages began to appear with comments on how she looked

Some accused her of lying or being a money grabbing crook

Others attacked her sexuality and wanted her to pose

A few sent lewd pictures of themselves not wearing any clothes.

This campaign of hate continues, but she’s too embarrassed to tell

She cannot sleep, unable to eat, she’s trapped in cyber hell

The trolls control her every thought, she just wants to be left alone

And dreads the moment every day when she switches on her phone.

Her charity boss has noticed that she’s not her usual self

She looks withdrawn, she’s very quiet, he’s worried about her health

Says he’s noticed a change in her demeanour and asks if something’s wrong.

She says she loves her charity work but cannot carry on.

Shocked and disappointed, he asks the reason why

She nervously reaches for her phone and then breaks down and cries

She says she feels so guilty and ashamed by what people say

Then shows him the vile posts, she’s receiving every day.

He says “no need to worry, this can be easily resolved”

We’ll place a statement on our website and expose these nasty trolls

Point out they’re sad lonely narcissists, who need pity but hanker our fear

And explain there’s no room in our forum for you pathetic losers here.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Something similar to this story was experienced by the daughter of a friend of mine. Fortunately, it ended well and she has learned how to deal with unwanted comments and requests.

Hey stranger - thought you were lost and gone forever.
I understand the internet is a kind of electronic Wild West... I think a good amount of care and discretion should be applied when revealing one's self anywhere there.
Luckily MPS seems a fairly safe place.
Enjoyed the write though for it's hopefully satisfactory conclusion.

Thanks Dave. Thought I would give my attempts at poetry a break as there was nothing that came to mind that I considered worth writing about. Then during a random conversation, the subject of internet trolls was discussed, so thought this maybe worth a go.
