Rocky Lagou

Born skinny.

Born ugly.

And relentlessly courageous!

A child was shed and out rattled a man-child into a big world.

He was not prepared. But he was defiant.

He saw words in place of locations and people.

He was aimed for something greater than himself.

It was engraved in his tombstone before he even had a tomb.

It was destiny calling, and he had two fat open ears keen to hear

Her voice.

Born bold.

Born strong.

And prophetic.

Tearing down the streets like electromagnetic,

With a st- a st- strut so onomatopoetic.

Forget it.

He’s 17. So unapologetic.

Born bold, born strong. The kid is poetic!

  • Comment from author about the poem: Howdy poetic buddies! To contrast my last post, which came from a dark side of me, I present to you my birthday poem. The skies are starting clear up a bit. And my coming-of-age has started to bubble in my stomach. I turn 17 today. And I have big plans of moving out at 18 and pursuing my artistic aspirations. Thanks MPS for the constant support.

Hi kind poet, thanks so much for this shower of compliments. I feel like my emotions can be come conflicting at times, but I believe that this poem best embodies the person who I aspire to be; peppy, lighthearted, and bold. It's people like you who make the ride worthwhile, have a lovely day!

I'm sure you will make it, Rocky. Any support you have received here you have earned.
      Good luck.

      • Rocky Lagou

Hi Dave, sincerest thanks for your kindness. I think Emily Dickinson best encapsulated the mission of poetry: "If I can stop one heart from breaking, I shall not live in vain." It's truly the internal and intimate expression of oneself that can inspire others to live life to the fullest. So I just write poems in the hope that I can have that sort of impact. Have a great day poet.

Happy Birthday Rocky,I turned 40 on Thanksgiving and just now got away from my parents,no I'm in Florida with my love, foreverjesus6,finally,after 5 years,we met here actually,I loved your poem, keep writing my dear Rocky, you're a very talented writer, ever decide if you were going to expand your writing like into music ?

          • Crowns4Christ

I think that you could be very successful, either in professional writing or music, just follow YOUR dreams and don't let anybody drag you down, you seem to be a great guy,, keep it up my friend

            • Rocky Lagou

Hi dear, it's incredible to hear that we have very close birthdays. To be honest, some people get along very well with their parents, and I can see why'd you stick along, but sometimes friction and other things make the ride a little messy; so, although I love my dad with all my heart, I feel like embracing independence sooner than later will be best. It's really nice to see you finally got to meet your "one and only." I live in Miami, Fl myself and can say that you've made a great geographic decision. The sun is almost always shining, and the cultural diversity is beautiful. On the topic of expanding my writing, I actually have thought of branching out. For starters, music has always been my number one, even before poetry. I love singing and I actually have written a couple of songs. So when I move out at 18 I have big plans of going to a music college and getting signed to a record label. It's a little starry-eyed, but I know that even if it doesn't come to fruition then I always have poetry and prose to bounce back to. Thanks for the kind comments, they really mean a lot to me. Have a wonderful day.

              • Crowns4Christ

I remember that music is your passion,it will happen if it is God's will,I wholeheartedly believe that,it will happen Rocky it just don't ever give up on your dream,do you ever make it over to Hollywood or Dania Beach

Hi intrepid poet! I must say, your keen writing has been one of my inspirations. Like you really have a wonderful ability to articulate your emotions and experiences and all the while magnifying the key parts. Your kind wishes are lovingly embraced, may you have a great day!

Yes, Happy Birthday, Rocky. Surely not all teenagers have a depressive or melancholic stage.
Ooh, what you doing knowing words like 'onomata-thingy' at age 17? I probably never knew it until about age 57. You're intelligent there! lol.

                  • Rocky Lagou

Hehe, oh Orchi you never fail to get a good giggle out of me. I'm really glad you digged the poem. I feel like my emotions tend to toggle between "happy" and "sad," and then sometimes hovering in between, or completely off the range! But it's nice to know that there's generous poets like you who provide that extra (but needed) push in the right direction. I hope all is well with you and that you have a lovely day!

Happy Birthday!!!!! I love this poem due in part to the fact that it reminds me of a song by my favourite artist. "Angry Young Man" by Billy Joel. It is my belief that your talent will take you far, the same way that his did. As far as the change from your last poem to this one, the song explains that perfectly.
"And he's proud of his scars and the battles he's lost
And he struggles and bleeds as he hangs on the cross
And he likes to be known as the angry young man"
We all struggle, it is what we make of it that means something, and you made beautiful poems. Be proud Rocky. Happy 17th, if a bit late.

Hello Joan, I'm sorry to be responding only now, but life has been a bit turbulent as of late. Thanks so much for your kind wishes and compliments. I mean I've said this from the beginning of my poetic journey, but it's still my motto today: "my goal is to resonate with others." And to see that you can connect is really gratifying. Also, I love Billy Joel as well! Although I tend to lean more towards modern music, those types of classic artists never fail to be relevant. "Piano Man" is a song that I've grown up with and one that evokes memories of the "good old days." That song you've chosen is very apt with my current situation, and I hope that you also thrive in whatever it is that your heart aspires. Have a great day!

                    • Aradhya

Happy birthday rocky, I have no doubt you'll be getting exactly where you want! A very motivational poem you have written and the lines were mind blowing.
                      I loved the final line.
'Born bold, born strong. The kid is poetic!' Bravo!

                      • Rocky Lagou

Hey Aradhya, thanks so much for your generosity! I'm beyond thrilled to see that you could resonate with this piece. I always try to connect with the reader, so it really means a lot. I wish the best for you, too, on your journey - be it poetry or any other aspiration. Your poems never fail to stun in imagery and emotions. Have a beautiful day!

Hi L.B. Mek. It's so kind of you to leave a comment and a "fave." Many thanks for the kind wishes. Your own poems really speak volumes to who you are, and they are so incentivizing. I really hope you continue to shine your talent. Thanks again, and have a lovely day dear poet!

"Born bold, born strong. The kid is poetic". The kid knows himself at 17. The kid is wise beyond his years. The kid is unstoppable, engaging, charismatic, lovable, funny, courageous... He is such a fav!

                          • Rocky Lagou

Omgggg, thx. I managed to scribble this poem as a fleeting bout of joy passed me by. It was so strange, being that I've been living in such a cloistered life for so long; when the feeling appeared, I almost forgot it's name: "Happiness." Your words just add to love that I feel, thank you.

                          • Ok Waleed

                            Great word choice
