Tune: Abridge

('Be thou my guardian and my guide')

Colossians 2 v.18-19

**********

Let no person here you beguile

Or chet you with their style

Nor rob you of your reward when

They live false humbly then

And too in worshipping angels

Come with us, each oen tells

They intrude into these things they

Have not seen e'en one day

They vainly puffed up and proud be

Live by fleshly mind, see

They hold not to Christ, He the Head

Our Saviour from the dead

The Head, from which all the body

By joints, ligaments, see

have nourishment ministered to

Them, fed by Christ anew

And from Christ the Head, the body

Is knit together, he

Enables it, His church, to grow

With increase of God so

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in the Colossians series, in 8.6.8.6. format. It is moving towards teaching about false ways, such as worshipping our own will - 'will-worship' - and asceticism - strict discipline of ourselves, and doing physical penances, but which are useless in trying to earn our own salvation. But that's for the next poem.

I saw one in church doing 'rituals' - crossing oneself continually, kneeling then rising several times. All that was before the service started. I thought 'you'll be worn out before you've started, with all that lot (of guff!)'.
It is guff or bunkum if we're trying to do it to earn our salvation, or earn some of it.

That would be the most valuable freedom ever!

Thanks CB. We can be free from all that ritual stuff. It won't get us any further in our faith. Doh!

I often think that the rituals count for little, where as the life lived with kindness, generosity and love speaks volumes. Here, here Orchi, well said!

Thanks Bella. St Paul says, in other words, it won't get us very far, if anywhere - these rituals, etc.

Those rituals mean nothing, one belief must be within each person and it is unique to them.
