Tune: St Fulbert
('Ye choirs of new Jerusalem')
Colossians 2 v.20-23
********
If you be dead with Christ, your [old sinful] state
Why do you contemplate
Follow man-made rules, rudiments
That give no godly sense?
Why as living as of the world
These principles unfurled
Why subject to them, as if they
Bring salvation your way?
Examples are, 'Touch not', 'Taste not'
'Handle not', that your lot
They are all to perish when used
Even when they abused
They be commands, doctrines of men
If you follow them then
They have a show, an appearance
Of wisdom, [but] no use hence
No use of gaining salvation
Will-worshipping is done
Self-imposed religion it be
Seemingly shown humbly
And too neglecting the body
Ascetic practice be
But cannot improve in what we
Have, life through Christ here, see

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. format. Some explanatory words in Bible margin notes were helpful in composing this (e.g. verse 5). In verse 3, we all have to obey laws, but we cannot earn our salvation by doing good deeds - nor by not doing bad deeds. e.g. 'Taste not': If we taste something that is by man-made laws forbidden, that human law 'perishes' as we have disobeyed it.

Great write Steve, I always enjoy reading your work,
Thanks C4C.
Sometimes we over extend ourselves with fixing and improving the corruptible which we all "know" is only going to be sorted when He returns for us. But yes, there we go again!
Thanks CB.
You can't tell a book by its cover, it's not what that is on the outside that counts. True religion is not what is commanded but what comes from the heart. Good write.
Thanks SB.
Good one Orchi.
Thanks Gold.
