I’m So Frightened of These Lights

AuburnScribbler

I hear “hell’s bells”, Mariah’s song,

I feel the stampede, of their throng,

draped so lurid, in red and green,

taking peace out, from any scene,

roaring into Black Friday fights,

I’m so frightened of these lights,

not only on the street, does it whir,

also at home, my computer blurs,

I’m trying to learn, to get away from fads,

but it’s hard to swim, through pop-up ads,

fat cat accounts, rise like kites,

I’m so frightened of these lights,

the wholesome, become supersonic,

“it’s fine” they say, as if it’s tonic,

overdosing, so they can get their fill,

in the name of Christ, they do indeed kill,

all their senses, and all their insights,

they should be frightened of these lights,

you’re in, hook, line and sinker,

in a pool of mulled wine, you’re the drinker,

imbibing all that festive cheer,

not worried; at all, about next year,

you might sleep outside, in cold nights,

saying “I’m frightened of these lights”,

at this time, you see love and care,

though throughout the year, not all there,

hence, with tradition’s sake, act accordingly,

where fake redemption, is on display,

please be kind, to loved one’s plights,

as, I’m sure, they’re frightened of these lights,

let this Christmas, be a guiding torch,

let us recount; what recent years have taught,

thus, let’s enjoy, but also, exercise our wisdom,

making sure not to go on; building our prison,

so, like you, I’ll be open, to whatever invites,

to become less frightened of these lights.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Hi all, I hope all is well, and I suppose seeing as we’re in December, a very Merry Christmas to you all! Reading back on my “seasonal poems” in recent years, they come across as overly celebratory, and are written in a tone that can be described as, “someone who has been very lucky indeed!” With this in mind, my Christmas poem this year (of which I hope isn’t a complete “downer”), is more of a “wake up call”, as we do tend to “transform” somewhat during the festive period. When late November arrives, the Christmas ads come on the TV, and there’s one in particular in the UK that pulls on your heartstrings. The advert for the Salvation Army charity; tells the stories of those who are less fortunate, and it mainly focuses on homeless people trying to escape dire situations. I’ve donated in the past, but I think this poem will add to those past donations. Whilst “transforming” myself, and when I’m out and about Christmas shopping, I sometimes feel frightened by the Christmas lights, and of course, I try to avoid listening to a certain song, but the more I think about things, after the hurt of the last two years, and the hurt that continues because of such greedy stupidity, we really do have to learn a hard true lesson. As a species we have never been greedier or angrier, and though in terms of what we think is improvement, we are most certainly at our worst! So, in the words of that D-Ream song “things can only get better!” Please do enjoy this Christmas, but I implore you all to be reflective too. I hope that you enjoy the poem, and take something from it, and also accompanying the poem, is what I think; would be an appropriate dark agent to avoid, an image of a scary snowman from vectorstock.com, penned by the artist lilu330. Finally, as always, please do stay safe everyone.

"Christmas" (or I, as a non believer prefer ' The Festive Season') was, in the Northern Hemisphere, originally celebrated as the Winter Solstice. Later overlaid by Christianity, and then the final indignity, Santa Claus and so on........Bah humbug! .................. ............... I still engage in an exchange of presents on Xmas day.........
    Take care of yourself, AS.

Thanks for the read Doggerel Dave, and I hope that you've had a Merry Christmas, and you've started the New Year right.

Righto Dave, I fully appreciate what you do in the festive period, it certain gets rid of certain stresses, my family and I do a fair bit, but more so when it comes to food and drink, it stems from an old family tradition, so we "tag-team" cook in the kitchen, and by the end of it we certainly have earned a glass of something cheerful and indeed some sleep! Hahaha!

I hope present wise, you got something pleasant, I will do, and you care too, I hope that all is well!

It had certainly gone too far in this day and age Ben.

I glad that you agree, by far too much stress, over in essence what is a "blink and you'll miss it" period.

I hope that all is well!
