Tune: Es Ist Ein Ross / St Germanus

('A great and mighty wonder')

Luke 1 v.34-38

**********

Gabriel's word to Mary

She would bear a son, see

While still a virgin, His name

Would be Jesus, the same

Chorus

Mary the Lord's handmaid

Through her God's works be displayed

His word be firm, sure, staid

Mary said, How shall this be?

The angel said, Here, see

The Holy Ghost you shadows

His power you shall know - Chorus

Therefore also that holy

Child to be born shall be

Called the Son of God Most High

This true with no deny - Chorus

And behold your cousin she

Elisabeth, name be

Has conceived son in old age

E'en in her advanced stage - Chorus

She was barren, but shall bear

A son, motherhood share

For with God nothing shall be

Impossible, grace free - Chorus

Mary said, look, I humbly

Handmaid of the Lord be

And it shall be as you say

Angel showing God's way - Chorus

  • Comment from author about the poem: A Carol-poem. Verses in 7.6.7.6. Chorus in 6.7.6. This continues from the previous Carol. I've made it into two carols so it would not be over-long. They hymn is at least 1,000 years old. St Germanus in the title lived to about age 100.

Thanks Bella. Jesus revealed Himself first to a woman, Mary Magdalen at His resurrection!
'Naughty' Zacharias did not believe he would be father of John Baptist. He was struck dumb for a while. But understandable, humanly speaking. he is in a later poem of mine - to follow.
