Bride's Day

Lucy BC

When I was a child, I was worried
I'd never get to wear that white wedding dress
And sing like a lark while the bells ring,
Gazing into my husband's eyes.

When I was younger, I was worried
I'd always be last picked
(I was, but that meant nothing to my fears)

I worried about not being kissed
Lips that tasted of the boys that missed me
Standing at the edge of the concrete
Like a loser.

If they approached, I turned the other way
Because I didn't care, bell chimes ringing in my ears
Far, far, and never to celebrate me.

When I was a child, I worried about loneliness,
Left the unlucky bride in a cold church aisle
Bound to my loss by a chain.

This was very poignant and I adored every word.
I must say dear poet, your writing style is very clean-cut and evocative.
The images that you craft are touching, and I hate to see you feel this way.
But I'm sure you'll find your one and only someday.

thank you! the poem was an exploration of asexuality/aromanticism and coming to terms with it in a world where romance is so heavily capitalised 🙂 as a child, it was difficult to deal with... but not anymore, luckily
