We never think
that who we are
now, though old
ourselves,
could ever be
as old as they
who sit and stare
who stagger up
or down the stairs
whose beloved other half's
hardly ever there
in mind, memories' bare
of what once was
of where they went
or who's that man
or woman
do I know them?
I see them on TV
mostly thin
not quite gaunt
those more fit men
wearing jaunty cap
of tweed, atop silvry hair,
far more able
to walk about
with stick in hand
a stagger here, yet
more fit than those
who sit at home
in a chair,
not much to do
than stare into space

- Comment from author about the poem: When we are young, and free and easy, we are not that much aware of what we might be like when we reach a certain age, whilst the older we get, the more we put off such awareness. When we reach an older age - and I mean by that, our mid-70s - many of us see, think and/or believe ourselves to still be young in spirit and movement, fit & able to easily get around, and NOT be dependant upon others. Seeing a television programme recently made me more aware that whilst there are a lot of things we can do without thinking how we are going to achieve our aims, there are many oldies who at my age and older are now permanent fixtures in Residential Homes, Nursing Homes, and elsewhere, who, towards the end of their days, are not aware as to where they are, do not recognise their own family, or why a stranger is speaking to them. My poem, though short, hopefully conveys what - for some - is a life that is dead before it has ended. Those of us still alive, but old, hope we will never be as they, yet none of us know what is before us. Perhaps it is just as well?!
