Quest Against Quenching

orchidee

Tune: St Francis Xavier

('My God, I love thee, not because')

1 Thessalonians 5 v.19

*********

Quench not the Spirit, let not fear

Rule your hearts, minds, lives here

So He not suppressed nor repressed

But active, and you blessed

Be yielded to Him, and not damp

Him down as a dimmed lamp

Nor that flow of His oil be blocked

But faculties unlocked

As dove that flies, so inwardly

You find liberty free

Confessing sins, what displeasing

To Him, them to Him bring

And forgiveness and peace there find

Restored and renewed mind

Allow Him to possess you more

With Christ's perfect life sure

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. format. Sometimes I think being 'in the Spirit' is jumping up and down in charismatic church meetings. But it's not only that. We don't have to 'jump up and down' but one feels left out if nearly everyone else is doing so. But then we may only be copying others, and not be in the Spirit, but acting from human effort.
