You Could Have Tried

alyssajadyn

I wonder if you survived this, would you have stopped? Would you have been there for my high school graduation? What about college? Would you have walked me down the aisle? Did you ever acknowledge the "i luv u's" instead of the "I love you's "? What about the late nights of us just knowing you would call? You got busy, that's all. It's not like you forgot, how could you? It's all we wanted you to do. Just call. Tell us your lies about how you would get clean and let us think that it's what you mean. But you waited until 2014 and tried and failed, and that was it. Fast forward 9 years, and you have your "Next of Kin" signing papers at 18 for your body to be released for viewing. All because you just couldn't stop using.

  • Comment from author about the poem: My father overdosed on January 29th, and I think it's the most selfish way he could have died. Now, I will never know what he could have done if they could have restarted his heart. I've begged for years for him to get clean, and he just couldn't stay clean.
