I was there, back in the day,
Those days in the sixties,
Those days before discos,
When groups played on stage
And we all danced.
Danced to songs of the time.
That time when music changed,
And the music changed our lives,
Changed our attitudes,
And led us into a new way,
A new way of enjoyment.
Yes I was there
Dancing the night away,
Until at least ten thirty,
When the last dance was played,
The slow one and I danced close,
Close to the girl I was with.
I would slowly walk her home,
Not wishing to break the spell
Of our time together.
A sweet kiss as we parted,
Complete innocence
Yes I remember the sixties.
Some say that if you remember the sixties
You were not there,
But I was there looking for life,
Not war, not drugs.
I was looking for and found happiness,
Happiness in those times,
When the young people took the country by storm.
The dowdiness of the fifties dispelled,
And changed into the glory of the sixties.
Here I am looking back,
Looking back at those times,
And I find that during that time
I have one thing that has not changed.
On the very rare occasions that I dance
Some fifty plus years later,
I still step to one side,
And then step to the other side,
As I did back in the sixties.

- Comment from author about the poem: I was there in the sixties dancing to the great songs of that time. They say the sixties was full of sex and drugs and rock and roll - I did have the rock and roll.

Good write Gold.
I did some dance thingy, of two steps forward, and one step backward. I didn't know if I was coming or going! Doh! Yet it seemed to symbolise a somewhat eccentric church, where this dance took place.
Thanks Orchi, even I was going to a C of E Church in those days and the Church Youth Club where many friendships were made - back in the day.

I don't know a lot about pop songs, but I know that 'comedy' seemed to stop, oh, about 1975 I think it was. No more sit-coms of any worth these days. And I go to bed before ghastly stand-up comedian shows. People talking utter rubbish.
Very true Orchi.

I really loved this Goldfinch 60, - A time of revolution and slow dancing. I had a bit of r and r myself but not til the mid 70's!
Thank you Jules, the seventies had some good bands as well and as far as I am concerned there has not been much good stuff since the seventies.

The poem offers a heartfelt tribute to a bygone era and the lasting influence it had on the speaker's life.
Most kind Mottakeenur, so very true.

My Strongberg-Carlson record player, an adapter holding a stack of 45's, you take me back dear friend to the decade that ushered in revolutionary change in our culture, and shaped a whole generation. We danced for joy to the music of the 60"s, and it endures today which speaks volumes. Thank you for this trip down memory lane, my day just got a lot happier!
Thank you Bella, I am glad I made you feel happier, it is what that music does, it makes us happy.

Now we was playing 78's as well as 45's, millions of years ago! There were 33's and 16's too - still are?
They are still around Orchi, I have them in my loft!
Andy
In my daftness, I used to play them at the wrong speeds on purpose, either too fast or too slow!
Those were the days dear friend - - we thought they never would end - - - what a time to have been there back then.

Thank you Fay, they certainly were the days.

I could be wrong, but it seems to me the '60s saw the most changes in that one span of 10 years than any other decade. I think the Beatles had a huge part of it. I grew up in the '60s and to this day is my favorite era of music. Awesome write Andy. 👍
You are right AP, it was the decade that saw a great change in life. I too grew up in the sixties and had my first job as an analytical chemist in 1965, it was a wonderful decade. Thank you.
