A Rueful Jest

Vera Podell

jokes fill my mouth and their ears

so now they finally shut up

chuckle comes out of their throats

and it is when i find out

i know the things they want to hear

and i'm about to puke the words at them

it doesn't matter how we're feeling

unless we're silent it all remains the same

i am a junkie for their attention

but i am trying to neglect

although each time i'm getting sober

i am not sure how their laughter

should have felt.
