We wear a mask of good and fine,
not sad, not happy either
Our disposition stagnant, benign,
a mask, not good nor evil
No use in faking happy,
when happy isn’t standard
No peaks nor any valleys
a total loss of candor
We wear a mask to shield us
our enthusiasm gone
expected to conform, thus,
we are robots when the mask is on

- Comment from author about the poem: As a young girl in high school, I've picked up on certain cues that lead me to think all that is expected of us emotionally is nothing. Friends rarely share their true sadness or their true happiness. We are expected to act as if we are emotionless beings. Being who I am, this is impossible for me to do and I feel shut down and restrained by this lack of openness. I want to share how I feel, but feel as if I am the only one doing it.
