Blood on Manโ€™s Conscience

Accidental Poet

There once was a time

When men thought not of empathy

All they cared about

The results of their greed

Hunting down species of whales

Giants of the sea

With a rhythmic heartbeat

Same as you and me

Raising their young

To grow big and strong

Little did they know

They won’t live that long

For within their bodies

Lies the oil man spills

All he sees are dollar signs

No matter of the life he kills

Lacking a conscience

Man only worships the evil green

Bank accounts that grow and grow

The life taken never seen

By God’s grace

These days things have changed

Laws protecting the whales

Lives of men and whales rearranged

But the sins from days of past

Lay in history’s consequence

The value of life

Blood on man’s conscience

      They tell a tale
      Of men of old
      Who hunted in the sea
      For fish and whale
      In storm and gale
To bring home warmth and meat.
They fed the young and the old
      And all in between.
      The sea provided bounty
      Gave them their meat.
      That was before globalisation
Who are you trying to defeat?

True words AP, hopefully we will learn one day.

Thanks Andy. The problem with much of society is that too much importance is on the almighty $$, instead of humane and compassion for other living beings. But...like you said, hopefully we will learn.

        (while I love Melville's classic
        your words exasperate, my discomfort
at the romanticising of such a cruel culture
        yet, somehow
it feels worse this days, since
        we're hunting them purely
out of comfort's excess, than need
        history, at least had necessity
        to argue with
modernity, is just pure wanton barbarity and greed
        for that 'so called' delicacy)
        love the empathy, dear Poet
        an important write

Thanks LB, you would think barbaric ways of life would have grown up by now (in a perfect world). If there are aliens watching us, I envision them just shaking their heads in disbelief that we haven't evolved into a more peaceful species. ๐Ÿ™„

or at the very least, a logical species
            that learn from their mistakes...๐Ÿ˜Œ

              Yes, at very least. ๐Ÿ˜‰

uncanny my friend, I just heard the sound a whale makes when crying ..

              • Accidental Poet

And when a whale crying is enough to make a human cry, that's called compassion. Thanks N. ๐Ÿ™‚
