Sirens

AuburnScribbler

Wandering Odysseus,

did what a man could,

fell in love so easily,

bound to piece of wood,

so brave, so stupid,

so evidently plain,

his folly of base sin,

built his water grave,

fast forward to right now,

and not much has changed,

though women upon rocks,

do seem a little strange,

but a honey trap prolongs,

to make war out of love,

ensuring to err remains the norm,

sick joke from up above,

but if not this, something else,

comes blaring through,

adorned with garish lights,

in all shades of blue,

the soundtrack of the city,

comprise so very loud,

testing mob mentality,

dispersing every crowd,

a siren has always meant,

bad luck, or foolishness,

for him back then, and we today,

ignore judiciousness,

just like an ancient song,

these bleeps, call control,

both crime and so-called order,

examines every soul.

  • Comment from author about the poem: From the myth of Odysseus's savage honey trap, to the modern day blares of police cars, ambulances and fire engines, sirens have always been. To me, when they sound, they tell a story of either someone's bad luck, or, surprise, surprise, someone who has made a very bad decision. But also, they herald a fanfare of control, that may not ever be needed, due to a much more considered way of thinking, which, today, is very much lacking. However, we are human after all, thus the sirens will remain to either allure us, or to keep us in check. Accompanying the poem is a charming piece of artwork from Kurt Chang (https://kurtchangart.tumblr.com/post/161046784258/mermay-mermay2017-mermaid-police-policewoman), which I though was very apt, and the banner picture, to me both resembles a beacon upon an emergency service vehicle, but also, is a visual representation of the haziness of mankind, whilst under some kind of influence. I hope that you enjoy the poem, I hope that you remain strong in these frustrating times, and as always, please do stay safe everyone.

Thanks for the read and for favouriting this poem James, it's very much appreciated.

When I saw Kurt Chang's artwork, whilst searching for an apt visual accompaniment, I thought this was knockout, so I had to included it, and as a result, I'm glad that you think my words and his artwork marry well.

Thanks once again, and I hope that all is well.
