SAM COOKE STILL NO.1
I get in silly fights insisting Sam was best ever. His uniquely mellifluous tone even exceeded Johnny’s 12th of never. 19 songs in a row made the chart ,none less than Marvin opined his music as pure art. Whether bringing it home with Lou’s background YEA repeating or wishing to talk admitting Saturdays Nights loneliest feeling. Making a Chain Gang feel like a Wonderful World for some , leaving legacy bright with the great anthem of Civil Rights, no song ever better than
“A Change is Gonna Come”!
The world lost this great star at age 33, many nights and many fights I claim He’s greatest voice in musical HISTORY!

I have a thing about Leonard Norman Cohen ..
The minor falls the major lifts…
Ah soul music! What about "What a Wonderful World"? That one's a classic!
It’s in the poem. Couldn’t ever forget that one. I did miss Twisting the Night Away, though.
I know, just wondering what your thoughts are on that one specifically. Twistin' the Night Away is beautiful! More upbeat! 🙂
Don’t know much about history. A pretty white girl that likes soul music.? Hmmm. Now I think one of my friends is setting me up and sending you info.
Ha!!!! No set up! I'm actually from Dominican Republic. I grew up listening to soul music. I enjoy all types, but old soul along with r&b are my favorite! Music is not what it used to be!
I agree. I used to DJ here in Chicago and would only do soul or Jazz or some combo there of.
I love that! ❤️
I know the words to every Smokey Robinson song. In fact the first three girls that got in the back seat w me it’s cuz I used Smokey Lurics as a lure.”people say I’m the life of the party cuz I tell a joke or two..,”
It's definitely a creative and old school way to lure the ladies. But, can you keep up after? 😉 "The Tracks of My Tears"
Let him walk on out if he wants to , he really doesn’t deserve you His loss is our gain so don’t be blue , cuz stone blind and out of his mind is what he has to be, so baby straighten up come ion and dry your eyes it’s no catastrophe…
🎶 Yeah! And say now, baby, baby, don't cry, baby, baby, Don't cry, baby, baby, here's why,
Love is here standing by, Love is here standing by 🎶
Dig!
Bobby you send me
Honest you do
Fantastic tribute
That’s made me turn red.
Thank you for being a serious patron of his memory-All I know is that he was likely intentionally silenced-his soul will live on, in his wide range of frequencies, I pray
That’s the landing spot. Perhaps you are aware or perhaps find the story involving A Change is Gonna Come.
Sam’s wife considered that song to be personal to Sam and thoughts the protests could dilute its power and she took it off the market , illegal to play on Radionand illegal to sell as a record. It remained that way until Spike Lee was going to direct the movie, Malcolm X, starring Denzel. Spike would not make that movie without at least having the rights to play that song in the famous scene where Denzel is walking by himself towards the river I think anyway when he was walking by himself, Sam’s widow finally agreed to allow that song to be played in the movie soundtrack, but would not allow it to be included on the actual sale of the soundtrack. it wasn’t until a few years after that where it finally was available for purchase and radio airplay. I myself had a bootleg copy and will admit that I did use that for situations when I needed undo influence from time to time, but hey, you know it goes if you got it and I’m out
That’s a powerful turn of events, too bad he didn’t get to have a say with all of it-you probably had connections through the radio DJ’s of the time then
Sam lived in Chicago just a few years before and even though most of the production work was fine in LA there were a few reel reel “masters” that floated into an old neighborhood studio near McCormack place. I knew a guy who who knew a guy and was able to cop a cassette copy off of the reel about 1968 ifuntil the movie that spike lee made released it, so it was cool.
Sam was always one of my favorites. There was something about his voice and the tone of his music that took me to another place.
