Sometimes we are born to people who don’t understand us
Left to find our own way and create our own comfort
Talking doesn’t help when people don’t want resolve
What they want is peace and quiet
Nothing to magnify what is really going on here
You can look closely if you want but never say what you actually see
Sweep it under the rug and it’s gone just like that
But it never really goes away
It comes back in different ways
Bubbles up at the worst times
So then have a drink
That quiets things down
For a time
Drink enough and make a fool of yourself
That shame is too much to take
Try to be good for as long as you can
But you never resolved the real issue
So it all becomes too much again
The cycle continues and there’s no resolution
Just moments of trying to be good
Promising to be better
But it never lasts
It’s all the same
We’ve done this loop a thousand times
And act like each time things will be different
How am I still standing by for this
I never signed up for this
I don’t even drink
I’ve been in the splash zone for too long
I’m finally walking to higher ground
What took me so long
Too much is too much
They are them
I am me
We are family
And we’re not that close

Drinking in these circumstances is like pouring petrol in an already raging fire
I couldn't handle it myself so had to give it up
The "talking " line was interesting
If that isnt working for them it still could for you
Or perhaps do your talking here
Good writing such as this isnt easy
Keep at it
Thank you, peto, for your kind words and empathy. knowing that other people understand and have been in similar situations is comforting to me. i'm glad you were able to get yourself to the other side. good on you.
It's not a race
You will get there
The loop and the act and the polite charade that you describe illuminates the tender walk we must negotiate through life. Nice job. I enjoyed.
The polite charade! That resonates so much. Thanks, Bobby.
