I remember, as a little girl
The sun did shine on me
As I played my childish games
Lost in happy reverie
And as each day passed by
I never gave a thought
To the grown up world around me
Unaware of hardships fought
My world was small and perfect
And my parents there for me
To dry each tear, give comfort
Put the band aid on my knee
My daddy read me stories
And at bedtime sang to me
With his gentle voice and cadence
As I sat perched upon his knee
My mamma took me on the bus
Which, always was a treat
I’d put the coins in one by one
Then find a special seat
In spring I would pick violets
That grew beside our house
A bouquet for my momma
To pin upon her blouse
Then I grew up, alas grew old
My world forever changed
It’s now a strange and hostile place
From which I feel estranged
Idyllic days of childhood
Have long since passed away
But the memories of that long ago
Will, forever with me stay
So when days are dark and news is bad
I find my special place
Of childhood dreams and fairy dust
Within my fond embrace

- Comment from author about the poem: I was fortunate to grow up in a very special house with wonderful parents. I was an only child, but never lonely. On nights when sleep does not come easily, I wander back through that house and its occupants, and blissfully fall asleep.

Dear Bella I actually admire your incredible childhood. Such a warm and joyful read. 💖
Thank you dear Teddy, it's the youngest years that always seem to hold the most joy perhaps because they are seen in a glow. Take care my friend!
the read is effortless and so very smooth with it's rhyme and timing. The imagery is quite clear and wonderfully descriptive. A very good and enjoyable write, a reminder of youth and how our elders protected and shielded us.
Thank you dear poet for reading and for your kind words, it is greatly appreciated.
this is an amazing poem Bella, clearly autobiographical & the love contained within it & which indeed inspired it, lends a very welcome warm glow at the end of a bloomin long day .. Perfectly crafted in every respect ..
Respect my friend & truly .. Neville
Thank you dearest Neville, your kindness overwhelmes me. Hope you're able to sit down with a cold one and let the world go by.
I shall remember this is a fine write Bella!
Thank you my dear friend!
Very heartfelt, so it was relatable-
Much appreciate your reading and kind comment. There is something magical about childhood, I'm sure it's the innocence.
Terrific writing
Flow and rhyme are magnificent
It's the content however that really stands out
You took me back to a bus ride with my mum and wee sister
To keep us amused she had us see how many xmas trees we could see in windows on journey
Also loved the last 6th verse especially
Thank you so much my friend, for reading and relating. Your comments are so kind. When you speak about xmas trees I think about the bus trips I took downtown with my mom, to see all the Christmas decorations in the department stores, then we would have lunch in a very special place. Those Christmas's are long gone, but they still come back to me every year. It is such a pleasure to share with you!
The kind of work I can appreciate, Bella. Aroused all my poetic sensibilities (such as they are). Complete enjoyment.
Kudos to your parents as they managed to maintain the illusion.
Than you dearest Dave for reading this old lady's lines, you are the kindest. I have to say that my mom was the master illusionist. Hope all is well with you, take care my friend.
Cooeee Bella. See, I did not forget this poem - I remembered it! lol.
Good for you Orchi, there's hope yet!
For those of us fortunate enough to have had such a supportive, loving childhood this rhyme rings true and gives feelings of comfort and nostalgia. A lovely write friend. I so enjoy reading your poems keep writing.
Thank you my dear friend, your words always touch my heart. I so often think of my early childhood years as priveledged, not in the context of wealth or status, because my family was very middle class, but in the parents I was blessed with and the wonderful role models they were. I have been very fortunate. God bless dear poet!
wonderful poetry and admirable choice of words✨
Thank you so much for reading and for your kind words, it is greatly appreciated.
that accursed 'news', forced down my repulsed throat
that two young girls died, outside their school
on the last day of the school year
recently
and i couldn't help sighing
we, so often
take for granted, how lucky we are
to take a breath, free of pain
to look back at a childhood we navigated
without too much trauma
and while reading your poetry today, cherished friend
as a I smiled, i felt
a little of the weary in my eyes
easing, even if just for a while
thank you!
Thank you so much my cherished friend for these lovely words, so glad to offer a little comfort to the weary in your eyes for just a little while. These old eyes of mine so often drift back to that yesteryear where life seemed so much simpler, and time did not move at breakneck speed as it seems to today. Let us feel fortunate in having known a time when we were not assaulted by horrific acts committed on what seems like a daily basis these days, all over this world. God bless dear friend! Thank you for the fav.
I love every fabric of this write. so much warmth! - Kudos, dear writer, very well penned!
Thank you dear poet for reading and for your oh so kind words. Your fav is truly appreciated.
Having a good childhood makes the world a better place for us all Bella.
Andy
Thank you so much dear friend, you are so right. It's in these elder years, when I have the luxury of time to reminisce, that those memories come back even stronger. Always appreciate your comments!
