The Last Goodbye

Teddy.15

It was New Year’s day

I couldn’t help myself

I just had to hear his voice

so I plucked up the courage and phoned him

It was a really long number

London to Dublin

but as soon as he answered, I instantly knew

his opening line was

“it’s great to hear from you”

there was an embarrassing pause…

then he said, “I’m with someone”

and at that moment I politely replied

“happy new year, I hope you have a great one”

abruptly I put down the phone

you see, phones were still attached to the wall in those days

and then, just then

something truly extraordinary happened

 I suddenly

Just got on with my life.

Dear Liz from your own beautiful poetry I get that this is something that has also happened in your life, for me it was only once and that was seriously enough, the pain was deeply profound but of course it's only a moment and I'm so happy that you relate and moreover enjoy my scribbles. Thank you beautiful poetess ❤️

      • LIZ

Aww, I remember the moment you said goodbye to me. I wish I had never met 'someone else' - being KP. That'll teach me to leave ya! lol.

              • orchidee

Do shut up, Orchi, says Fido. He also says to me 'You've made your bed (with KP), now you must lie on it'!
Arggh, do you mean that metaphorically, Fido? lol.

when it feels as bad as that, then it just has to be done .. did you get change from the phone ... I seem to recall one did if the call was cut short ..

and although I'm sure it hurt like hell at the time, you now know deep down in your heart that you did the right thing .. Here, have a little bit of mine 💔x

we never know what it will take
                            to cut that line, and
                            transmogrify someone's role
                            in our lives
                            from pivotal
                            to that rear mirror, irrelevant
but what a relief, when it arrives
so we may live our life, unchained
                            from regret...
                            (I so relate my friend
                            your matter of fact delivery
                            suited this subject
                            a crisp clean poem, about
                            a clean break)
                            how fitting

                            • Teddy.15

LOL and that's that dear MeK. 🤣 💖

Funny how the historical "Last Goodbye," has changed with the technology, first written and sent by courier, then written and sent by mail, then by phone, and today by text,
Your experience shows that males never learn how to handle relationships. We are much too macho to get hurt. Your poem is also a lesson on how to survive the breakup. "Just get on with my life," a powerful statement. - Phil A.

                              • Teddy.15

Thank you dear Phil, you speak such truth, over wasaap lol oh no that would just be terrible. Very empathetic and compassionate your words are thank you so much. 💖

And so it is after such moments we have to pick up and carry on. I remember those days with the phone on the wall or table operator and party lines. Used to listen in to the neighbor ladies and yell at them to hang up so I could use the phone. (I was 10 at the time) got in alot of trouble from my parents about this.
