Aspirational Ascent

Tune: St Theodulph

('All glory, laud, and honour')

Parts of Psalms 121-132

************

Chorus

I lift my eyes to the hills

The Lord my soul He stills

My help comes from the Lord sure

Today and evermore

The Lord He shall you preserve

In gratitude Him serve

He shall your soul preserve, keep

You are loved as His sheep - Chorus

Pray for peace of God's city

Jerusalem it be

They shall prosper that love you

Abides forever true - Chorus

With the Lord's help our soul is

Escaped as a bird, this

We know, the snare is broken

No more entrapment then - Chorus

They that trust in the Lord sure

Shall not move evermore

For they be as the mount fair

Zion, abides for e'er - Chorus

They that do sow in tears shall

Reap in joy, and do well

Their weeping turned to joy be

Fruitful sheaves gathered, see - Chorus

Children be an heritage

From the Lord, privilege

Fruit of womb is His reward

From Him the gracious Lord - Chorus

Let Israel hope in the Lord

And by Him be assured

That with Him there is mercy

Plenty redemption be - Chorus

My soul is as a weaned child

Not proud, but meek and mild

In the Lord I quiet myself

'Tis to my soul's good health - Chorus

The Lord has chosen Zion

This His habitation

Here be His rest for ever

He dwells here, departs ne'er - Chorus

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem with verses and chorus in 7.6.7.6. Psalms 12--134 are called 'Songs of Ascents' - sung by the Jews as they went UP the mount/hill to the Temple. If your Temple/Church is at the foot of a hill, you can sing these songs when you go back UP the hill after the service! Or sing them going there, as Songs of Descents.

The Psalm that got me through a turbulent childhood. From 'whence' could really make one wince.

Thanks CB. That's a lot of 'whences' maybe. How about some thences or hences, if ya run out of whences?! lol. I've started rambling on.....

            makes for good fences maybe...

            Who couldn't sing on ascension?

            • orchidee

Thanks 2781. The 'ascent' here could be any Sabbath, or other times they went up to the Temple.

I've often found that the ascent up a steep and rocky climb is much easier than the descent. Up is always the thrill of anticipation of what I will find. So true in our spiritual life as well I think. Love this write Orchi!

Thanks Bella. There's a Cathedral I know where we have to go DOWN a hill to get to it, as it's near a river too.
                And now a song, lol.
'Not for ever in green pastures
Do we ask our way to be (though they are nice!)
But the steep and rugged pathway
May we tread rejoicingly' (do we?!)

I added in those extra bits!

A lovely song, and the added bits are very nice. I'll bet it's a beautiful Cathedral.

You can look up St Alban's Cathedral, UK. St Alban, England's first martyr. An annual pilgrimage in June - I have been some years - with over-sized characters, and a bit grim - he gets the chop. Ghouls like that bit!

                    • Bella Shepard

I will look it up, thanks Orchi.

Hi Orchi, I just had a chance to google St. Alban's Cathedral and took the virtual tour. It is such stunning, and beautiful architecture, thank you for suggesting it. On a lighter note, I've just started binge watching old episodes of "The Vicar of Dibly" with Dawn French and loving it. Take care my friend!

Thanks Bella. St A's has the second longest nave in England, I think. Winchester Cathedral has the longest.
