Hooked On Rugby.

Goldfinch60

Totally hooked,

I was totally hooked.

Sitting there on a Saturday afternoon

Watching rugby on the tele,

Leigh Leopards against St Helens.

What a match it was!

I just could not move,

Every second was thrilling,

The underdogs fought well

And they beat St Helens

To win their way to the final,

The final of the challenge cup

The most prestigious win to be had,

To be had in Rugby League.

Th following afternoon

I watched the second semi final,

Hull Kingston Rovers against Wigan Warriors.

There was no way it could be as good,

Be as good as the one I had seen

But it was, another fantastic match.

Once more I was hooked

And once more I could not move.

It ended and it was a draw

So the golden point had to be played,

The first one to get a point,

Get a point in any way would win.

And then it happened,

A drop goal was kicked

And Hull won the match.

There I sat in wonder,

The wonder of seeing two matches,

Two matches so wonderfully played,

No animosity

Just the hard hitting within the rules,

That is the beauty of rugby,

And in these two matches

I had seen it at its best.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I watched both semi finals of the Rugby League Challenge Cup, they were both brilliant. Both codes of rugby are so good when played at there best and there is no animosity between the sides and unlike soccer there is no falling down injured if an opponent comes within a yard of you! The video show some of the tackles in rugby and they all get up after unlike th wimps in soccer.

takes me back to my Twickenham days
sport can be so invigorating, I so agree Andy
        but hey
those soccer gymnast's are such talented actors
give Hollywood a run for its money
        lol
        and as a fan
I genuinely hate what they've done to the beautiful game
(now its all money, money, money
        and clowning theatrics)

Thank you Mek, I have always liked rugby but football is now just an illusion, you are right there acting is better than many Hollywood actors.

Love to watch the game when I get a chance. Unfortunately on this side of the world it is not often that that chance comes along. Good write Gold.

Thank you soren, I hope that there will be more chances for you to watch the game.

Your enthusiasm is infectious dear Andy. I remember when I was in high school 67-68, we had professional soccer in the states. Myself and some friends were at practically every game. You could count the number of people in the stands on two hands, but we loved it. It lasted a few years, then went to indoor soccer and finally to oblivion. Just this year they have built a soccer stadium and once again we have professional soccer. Now one of my grandson's is hooked on it. I'll always remember those days in the stands. Thank you for reminding me.

My pleasure Bella, but soccer is nowhere as good as rugby in my mind.

I have to admit I've never seen rugby, probably don't know what I'm missing.

I don't know if you would be interested but I have loaded the match I saw Saturday afternoon, enjoy - I did.
