Tune: Hawkhurst
('Come, gracious Spirit, holy dove')
1 Timothy 6 v.3-7
*******
If any ones do not agree
With wholesome words of the Lord, see
Nor to teachings of godliness
They then the true way not confess
Such are proud, and they know nothing
But dote and argue o'er each thing
Of questions, words, from where envy
Strife, railings, revilings flow free
And evil surmisings are there
Such in suspicious minds do share
Perverse disputes, useless wranglings
Corrupt minds expression begins
They destitute of the truth, they
Suppose they are right in their day
That gain is godliness, selfish
They be, attend to their own wish
Continue not with such, witdraw
They be bad influence for sure
But godliness with contentment
Is great gain, and be heaven-sent
For we into the world brought nought
And it is certain, e'en if sought
We many things in the world we
Can carry nothing out, so be

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.8.8.8. Could maybe be sub-titled 'You can't take it with you!' (last verse).
