The Gentlemen's Game.

Goldfinch60

Well that time has come,

Four years since the last one,

The Rugby Union World Cup,

The finest sport of all.

Of the forty eight matches due

Eight were played this weekend,

And I was there,

There in France to watch,

To watch the matches.

Only I had not far to travel,

Not far to see them all

There I was sat in my lounge

Travelling around France,

Via the television.

The weekend ended with a great match,

A match that showed Rugby,

Showed Rugby for what it was .

No quarter given by either team

The spherical ball travelling all over,

Being throw, kicked and held

By the sportsman of the game.

The match ended,

One side had won,

But all had given their all

On that sward of grass.

As each player hugged each other

No matter which team,

The Game of Rugby had won once more.

This is the joy of Rugby,

A game for hooligans

Played by gentlemen.

So now I look forward,

Look forward to next weekend.

Eight matches played,

Only forty more to go.

  • Comment from author about the poem: I have seen every match in the last two Rugby Union world cup finals, 2019 and 2015, and I will see them all in this world cup final as well. Yes I am a Rugby Nut! The piece of music is on the radio now as I publish these words.

I've suffered and avoided all the flaming soccer on the screen, now it is the gentlemen's turn.

I'll get shot for this - can't stand women's soccer - seems daft them playing it.

        i was there Andy, lol
great memories of my time working at Twickenham
        come flooding back
one of the most enthralling sports to watch live!
        end to end, every minute

In answering a previous comment of mine, on a poem you wrote about a rugby game, you gave me a link to the game you had taped. I watched a portion and I was intrugued. Compared to our US football, it was almost graceful. Their tackles looked more like wrestling holds vs strangleholds. I can understand your enjoyment of the game, and I thoroughly enjoyed this poem, your passion shines.

Most kind Bella, rugby is a sport which I have loved to watch for a great deal of my long life.
