Mamma's Winter Coat

Bella Shepard

When I was just a child of four

Or maybe it was three

I remember mamma’s winter coat

As clearly as can be

I always thought it funny

That she could wear it either way

One side was speckled tweed

And the other furry gray

It hung in folds around her calves

Voluminous in style

And as she’d twist and swirl

It would always make me smile

When she wore it in the snow

She looked just like a bear

Playing in the drifts with me

White flakes upon her hair

Although it was too big for me

I never could resist

To find a way to wrap inside

And so I would persist

I’d tip toe to the closet

Quietly open wide the door

Tug gently on at the coat

Until it tumbled to the floor

Then gather in my arms

The object of my delight

And hurry to the wing chair

No one knowing of my flight

I would open up the coat

And arrange it on the seat

Then climb up in the middle

My task was near complete

Now to pull each side around me

And block out all I feared

In this soft and furry cocoon

Until I disappeared

I wish I had that coat today

To wrap around me tight

To shield me from the pain of life

To block it from my sight

To be that little girl again

To hide in furry bliss

I dreamt the other night

I could feel my mamma’s kiss

Well of course this is a wonderful poem, a beautiful scene hiding inside your mom's coat superbly written and left me smiling from ear to ear dear Bella. Dolly Parton's coat of many colours also came to mind. I adore that song she also wrote it for her mom. 💖

Thank you my dear Teddy, I'm so glad it made you smile. I love that Dolly Parton song. When I was little my mom sewed so many of my clothes, and I can still see her sitting at the sewing machine and singing as she worked. God bless, and have a heavenly day!

A wonderful memory and metaphor of how we look to the strength and comfort of the past; our mother, that took away all of our fears and gave us a vote of confidence that we wish we could still feel today.. A touching and poignant poem.

Nostalgia - so rich I almost felt I knew that coat and would be looking out for it every time I visit a charity shop from now on. (It's where I get most of my clothing - but don't tell anyone).
For me, a large wing back chair...Thanks for the smooth ride - it really drew me in, Bella.

              • Bella Shepard

Dearest Dave, thank you so much. I to buy my clothes at our local "Goodwill" shop, have done so for years so it will be our mutual secret. I've never seen another coat like it. I don't remember much from my childhood, but that is a memory that is so tangible, I can feel that fur around me even now. And that chair, if I could have both I'd be in heaven. Thank you for strolling down memory lane with me, it's always nicer with a friend.

made me think of my Fathers old jacket ..

I didn't need to squeeze a tear from my eyes while reading .. they came from out of nowhere all on their own ..

this is a magnificently crafted poem Bella that truly took me on a far too brief journey back in time .. and for that alone, I thank you .. Neville

Such a loving memory. It always seems to be the very small things in life that we remember most.
This poem brought back a picture of the wingback chair I would sit in when very young. A very pleasant memory. thank you for that, - Phil A.

Thank you so much for sharing the memory. You're right, those little things. It's also the feeling of everything being so much bigger when you are small that seems to make it even more special. Here's to those wing back chairs!

                          Brilliant!
so vivid, such clarity, effortless accessibility
(you would give Proust and his madeleine
a good run for their money)
I bow to your superior talent
                          dear cherished friend
                          and most admired Poet
(captured that child in your poetic voice so well)

                          • Bella Shepard

I googled Proust and his madeleine, and I'm overwhelmed by your kind words. Thank you dearest L.B., for it is talent far superior to mine that I admire, every time I read your inspired verse. Take care my beloved friend, you are a gift!
