Guilt of Longing

Firefall

I feel the guilt of longing every day

For the love of my life,

Not once but twice cast away

I struggle to hold on to the fading traces

Of your taste, your touch, your scent

Another life that lives in my imagination

Reality distorted by distance and time

Sparkling memories that dissolve like a meteor shower on a starry night

If I could only hang on

But sometimes I wish for an escape and pray for a cure

It's either the loveliest dream or never-ending nightmare

You said that what we had will never be again

So I beg for mercy to soothe the pain

Grant me grace to love again and live a joyful life

Silence my mind and absolve my guilt

Give me freedom from the longing

For I will aways love you

Powerful. The pain and longing are palpable.

A strong poem with a sense of loss.

A fine soliloquy, simple and honest, very universal. Those fading sensations, like the missed scent of a lost pet or the fading recollection of your grandmother's face, are indeed painful. We also miss the scent, taste, and touch. The line "It's either the loveliest dream or never-ending nightmare" is brilliant.
