Tune: St Timothy
('O Holy Ghost, thy people bless')
Mark 4 v.21-25
*******
Jesus said, Is a candle brought
To be put, so He taught
Under a bush or a bed? Or
Put on candlestick sure?
For there it shall give out its light
And give to others sight
Our own way too we shall see clear
As it does bright appear
For there is nothing hid, which shall
Not be shown, this know well
Shall be revealed, and what it be
All shall see it freely
Nor was anything kept secret
That stay unopened yet
But it shall be spread abroad, known
An to all shall be shown
If you have ears to hear, then hear
Take heed, and all endear
To you what you shall hear, for what you
Give, you shall receive too
If you hear, more shall unto you
Be given, this is true
But they that have not, from them shall
Be taken, you I tell
Not as the world, where more and more
Results in greater store
Of earthly wealth, but spiritual
Treasures Christ gives people

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. Verses 5 and 6 can be explained as saying if we don't hear, then we won't be given more to hear, maybe because we won't hear it anyway. But if we do hear, we shall be given more to hear - if you follow?! The title could relate to part of a Collect (formal prayer) for St Thomas Day: '....Thomas, who would not believe, until sight and sound [of the risen Jesus] convinced him....'
