The Long Goodbye
It was a long, long time ago
that you said goodbye to me.
I still can see that day clearly
no clouds were o’er the chateau.
We went outside to go strolling.
The streets held citizenry
toting their Christmas luxuries.
Your true-blue eyes were shining.
And I saw you wearing a smile
but that was to be short-lived.
As we neared the street where you lived
we stopped to talk for a while.
It was then we heard the thunderclap loudly.
The rain fell discreetly and then poured proudly.
We ran to your place to get some shelter.
That’s when I saw your bags standing by your door
and knew you would not be with me anymore.
For you were packed to go away.
No more skiing. End of stay.
It was a long, long time ago
that you said goodbye to me.
Yet, I know. . . that it was only yesterday.

Love can be filled with sorrow in some cases Phil.
Andy
I relate to the time distortion which can occur with the occurrence of traumatic events, Phil.
You are one of the very few poets I can tolerate love poetry from.
In your very well written poem you didn't mention why she was leaving. I'd like to think she wasn't leaving to move away from you. My Sharon moved away at 14 with her family to Los Angeles. Sometimes it's not good-bye, but until we meet again. Smile Phil, for the time you had with each other however brief it may have been, I hope for both of you it was worth it. 🙂
nice sentiment.
while the streets held citizenry a broken & empty heart was clearly left behind .. this is no ordinary poem that bangs on about love and loss .. this carries with it both a forewarning of enforced separation and an aftertaste of bereavement in its broadest sense .. a true mourning song .. with much respect sir I am delighted to be able to leave my mark here now ... So very sadly beautiful, how you have touched the stings of my heart with this Phil, your imagery and emotion is superb. You bring the word good ye such powerful meaning.
