Practical Points

Tune: Serenity

('Immortal love, for ever full')

1 John 3 v.16-19

For St John's Day - Dec 27.

************

Hereby we do God's love perceive

And all may it receive

Because He in His Son He gave

His life, us all to save

And we ought to our lives down lay

In this our age and day

For one another, world's goods share

Show practical love there

For if we can help, and see need

Provide, or others feed

If we shut up our compassion

Not help the needy one

How then in us does God's love dwell?

What deeds can others tell

Of us, if we not love in deed

But only to words heed?

Let it be actions, not only

Words, thus we love truly

And can know we of the truth are

In loving near and far

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8.6.8.6. It's fair, in that we are not expected to do what we cannot do, not to try to give what we have not got. Sometimes we might only have words to say, in loving others, and no goods to give them.

Thanks N. Yes, words are something. Better than nothing at all, I suppose, if we have no worldly goods to bestow on others.

          Thanks 2.
Yep, as it says 'If we say to someone poor, Be warmed and filled, but don't help them with food and shelter, assuming we have the resources to help, what good is that?!'

If only they would know the peace he has for us.

One can not give what one does not have, whether in wealth or in wisdom but I agree what we have it is a pleasure to share. This is the foundation block of true religion and humanity. Great write Orchi

              Thanks SB.
One of my earliest (said, not sung) couple of lines of poetry was:
'We cannot give what we haven't got
And God doesn't expect one person to do the lot!' (e.g. the Vicar).
