A Good Summer

Tom C Dylan

We had a good summer

spending time in the countryside

looking out over the lush green fields and trees,

sitting out in the sunshine, sipping wine and reading.

We had a good summer

catching up with friends and family

hosting lavish garden barbecues

burnt burgers and sausages, tinned lager and laughter.

We had a good summer

so good that you could almost forget,

forget about the diagnosis,

the treatment, the hospital and the doctors

and the twelve months you were given.

We watched with horror and sadness

as the leaves turned yellow, falling from the trees,

falling like tears and breaking our hearts

as our good summer, the best one ever,

and our last, was drawing to a close.

A heartbreak of a poem. Making the absolute most of time in devastating circumstances. Those last special days. I found your poem very moving. Reminded me of my younger brother’s last summer.

Your imagery is haunting. Kudos, I really wasn't expecting the twist. My deepest condolences. If there is a silver lining it's that you got or get to cherish those last months, and hopefully that makes the whole grieving process somewhat less difficult. 🤗 A natural process never the less tragic. Beautiful dear Tom.

Thanks a lot, Teddy. The whole family really appreciates having the time towards the end with her. The last summer was so sad but so very special too. I know it is a time we'll all look back on often.
