First-Class Stamp of Authority (in homage to those affected by the Horizon/Post Office scandal)

AuburnScribbler

A sour taste, on the envelope,

I’m sure I sampled theft,

as I sent, I saw their hope,

being doubled checked,

by a new Horizon,

sanction made,

too much revision,

overpaid,

Let art recreate life,

tell the story of their strife,

a vote of thanks to ITV,

for a first-class stamp of authority,

Letters poured in, at number ten,

and some at Buck House,

see what happens when,

a regime turns into louse,

skint ignored,

all the time,

those on board,

commit the crime,

Let art recreate life,

tell the story of their strife,

a vote of thanks to ITV,

for a first-class stamp of authority,

Pats on the back, do abhor,

such a putrid company,

but rightful voices, on the floor,

rescinded CBE,

thus, Charlie third,

remember this,

don’t be absurd

with your honours list,

for let art recreate life,

recall the story of wrong and right,

this lesson taught, in history,

a first-class stamp of authority!

  • Comment from author about the poem: I think I may have written a similar poem previously, but with it being part of the current headlines in the UK at the moment, this one is an actual dedication, to all those people who have been affected/effected, by the Horizon/Post Office scandal. To those outside the UK, the Horizon/Post Office scandal, was a mass computer error, which led to 700 sub-postmasters in the UK postal system, to be wrongfully accused of fraud, by the then faulty accounting software, Horizon. ITV (a UK TV network) broadcast a drama about the events, which by it's weight alone, has sparked further investigations. Eventually the sub-postmasters won their case, thus, received their settlements, but of course, there is obviously some sadness and frustration that still remains. Another bit of justice that happened this morning, is that Paula Vennells, (former boss of the Post Office) handed back her CBE honour, as such a blunder happened on her watch. In the UK, it is rare that an honour such as a CBE, is handed back, thus, such a "rectification", could start a real trend, in changing things for the better. I hope that you enjoy the poem, bravo to those sub-postmasters who spoke up for their rights, and as always, please do stay safe everyone.

Good words Ben, my best friend was involved in this 'back in the day' and he paid the money they said he owed them and hopefully he will get it back now.

I fear there are more than a few things wrong with my beloved country and there are many things left without justice, and many things that are swept under the carpet. 🤗 But hopefully in this scandal I do hope sincerely that all these postmasters get a lot of compensation
