Broadway Is Closed.

Goldfinch60

Into the village we went,

The village of Broadway,

A diamond of the Cotswolds,

It beauty and wonder

Attract people from all over.

Drove into the carpark

Hoping to find a space,

There were so many

I had never it like this,

The carpark with so few cars.

We walked into the village

Hardly anybody around,

Most of the shops were closed,

Even the coffee shop was closed.

So we wandered around

And as we did the shops were opening,

Eventually went back,

Back to our coffee shop,

It was open,

So sat and had our drinks.

We had never seen it like this,

Then the thought struck me,

Perhaps in this village,

This village of privilege

Maybe they did not get up,

Not get up before ten,

Before ten in the morning.

Perhaps they should have a sign,

A sign at the edge of the village,

“Broadway is closed before ten!”

  • Comment from author about the poem: I have been to Broadway, a beautiful Cotswold village, many, many times but have never seen it this empty, do they not get up before 10 in the morning?

Same with John Lewis shop now. Don't open before 10am. I expect staff are there, but not open to customers.
They open early on Saturdays, when people seem to shop later. Doh! What use is opening early that day?
Too snooty for me anyway. 10am, that's half the morning gone!

So true Orchi, 10am is certainly half the day gone in my days as well.

That's a shame.Still you'll just have to sleep in next time

Thanks David, I am always up at 6am and have been for most of my life.

my local town is Watchet a quaint & largely unspoilt old fishing port
and have noticed lately that there are fewer people about .. not sure whether it's the weather, the winter or what .. Neville

        • Goldfinch60

It certainly seems to be that way Neville in most places nowadays.

Maybe it is the very cold weather keeping the locals cosy and inside their homes.

I have to admit to preferring the places I visit to be quiet, and what a bonus being able to find a parking space without a problem. The Cotswolds certainly have some beautiful villages

I reckon it’s down to the weather.

It may well be down to the weather Cassie but we were walking around in the sunshine even though it was a bit cold.

I'm with Cassie on this one, must be the cold temps. 😬

              It may well be AP.
