The Last?

Thomas W Case

This could be
the last poem I
ever write.
I hope not,
but it's possible.

If it were my
last poem,
what would I want
it to say?
Wow, not so easy.

Poetry has been a
loving wife, and I
will miss her on
all those sleepless
nights, when dreams
don't come.
Writing poems have
kept me in touch
with all the harsh
pain, and all the
sublime beauty.
Both are supreme
teachers.

Poetry has opened
my ears to the
sounds of the
earth, the whispered
rush of the creek
running over stones
and sticks.
The cries of my
children in the
night wanting
their mothers'
milk.

If this were
my
last poem, I would
want it to bring
some joy and be
a bit less sentimental.
Oh well,
guess I have to
write more.

You are so sweet. Thank you.

Yes I too have thought that any poem could be the last, but this would only happen with my demise, in that once a poet always a poet. Here is wishing you many more poems to come.

If this has to be your last write Thomas, so be it if need be. But...don't be surprised if your Muse wakes you up in the middle of the night clawing at your pen to put down words you can't ignore. A Muse is a very difficult energy to put off. Good luck to you in all you do Thomas. 😉👍

Love the concept. What would be the last thing we would write? Another great poem, Thomas.

I am pretty sure all serious writers have already written that last chapter, poem, or verse already and maybe several dozen times or more .. the trick is to keep coming up with new titles .. Neville

Yes, great point. Thank you, N.
