The Look on His Face That Said Everything
It seems to me, he knew better
than to tell me
he felt down, or depressed,
or more like death, perhaps ..
So instead,
he compromised and said,
he felt sad, knowing I guess
that I would relate
to such a non-clinical stance
as that and since
sad required no intervention
except for the
passing of time and maybe
the birth of a smile or two ..
Today though,
for some reason, I feel as sad
as when my father
told me he felt sad, just before
saying his final goodbyes ..
I could tell he was
sad and not anxious or fearful,
by the look he
had in those tired hazel eyes ..
When he told me
that he loved me dearly
and tried so damn
hard to forge that last smile ..

Takes more than a clinician's view of the world to cope with....
A very pain filled piece, Neville.
it was not the easiest thing to write Dave ..
Now you’ve gone and done it! Started the water works off in the company of rain on the window pane. This piece apart from being incredibly moving is also inspirational poetry. I feel sad for you too and you have me thinking about my own father and how much I miss him. Good morning my friend.
and there was me thinking he was a one off .. I guess the lucky ones among us all think that don't we .. Good Afternoon & thank you Cassie ..
Your Dad was one in a million, but so was mine. Good afternoon Neville. Yes we were the lucky ones 🙂
A moving piece, Neville.
Aye Tom, a sad reflection .. thank you for feeling it too my friend .. Neville

A very emotional write here N. Brings back my own memories of both my parents passing. 🫂
Thanks for sharing that my friend .. isn't it funny just what can trigger such memories eh' a word, a sound a scent .. just about anything, I guess .. Neville
We all live such similar lives, yet in our own unique ways. 😉👍
Very beautiful. Your last lines really powerful and speak by themselves 🌹
Some things never seem to heal, do they .. 🌹
This poem requires words it is hard to find, to tell you how deeply moving it is. I sense a selfless man, who loved you unconditionally as you gazed into those eyes, a very special smile he tried to forge, just for you. I visited my father in the hospital on a Saturday morning, and that afternoon he died alone, in a hospital bed. I envy you those moments you had and cherish. God bless dear Nev.
Thank you so much my dear friend Bella.. and may your God bless you too .. Neville
Your father will always be with you Neville as mine is with me.
