Tune: Breslau
('Take up thy cross, the Saviour said')
Luke 22 v.39-46
************
Jesus came to Gethsemane
Garden, disciples followed free
He said to them, Pray that you do
Enter not in temptation true
He went from them a little way
Then to kneel down, and then to pray
Saying, Father if you willing
Remove this cup of suffering
Remove it from me, yet not my
Will be done, I do know it nigh
Then angel did to Him appear
Strengthened Him and to Him drew near
And being in an agony
He there did pray more earnestly
And His sweat was if drops great
Of blood falling*, such was His state
When He to disciples returned
They were sleeping, sad, not discerned
To do as Jesus said, Rise, pray
Lest you tempted fall from my way
Jesus, who for me sweated blood
Yet your blood it a cleansing flood
Help us to follow in your way
Whate'er may come to pass each day
