Sorry if there is a delay in replying or if I'm away for short periods. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon says, life is what happens while you're busy making other plans.
We headed over to the Lake District
one Bank Holiday weekend in May,
to walk where the great poets had tread
meant more than words could say.
We found ourselves down by the lake
in a small town called Bowness,
where the marvellous views of the lakes and hills
just took our away our breath.
Clutching my thin volume of poems,
I stared out at the lake, feeling so inspired,
my wife yawned and stretched her arms,
come on, love, she said, I'm tired.
I said, I can't believe I'm standing
on the banks of Wordsworth's lake,
a man passing by with his dog replied,
I'm afraid you've made some mistake.
While Windermere is a wonderful sight,
Wordsworth was not inspired here,
he lived miles away up the road,
at Dove Cottage on Grasmere.
Disgruntled I headed back to the car,
so sorry I couldn't stay,
and while the great poet hadn't lived here,
he may have visited for the day.

beautiful and reflective
Thanks Reynaldo. Really appreciated.
Good write Tom.
I remember when I spent time a few miles...from the Co-op! I didn't get far. lol.
Thanks Orchi. I'm more of a Tesco Express man myself. 🙂
Isn't it wonderful how places can inspire us to write? Great write Tom. 😊👍
Thanks AP. Yes, I was inspired by being up in the Lakes and close to where Wordsworth was, but not quite at the actual spot. And I thought, there's a poem in that too. 🙂
If you're not too far from there, you could go back and find the actual place he was writing Tom. Would be really interesting visiting those sort of places. 😁👍
Great imagery. I like this a lot.
Thanks, Thomas. Really appreciated.
Her may well have visited there Tom, I know I have. LOL
Andy
Yes, he may have popped over to Bowness while up at Grasmere. 🙂 Cheers, Tom.
Not full of other tourists was it, Tom ?
You've even managed to infuse a trip to the Lake District with your trademark quirkiness - and that lightens my day.
Thanks for that, Dave. And I have a trademark? Who knew? Cheers, mate, really appreciate your comments. Tom.
This is a good example of why I first fell in love with poetry .. thanks for the history lesson a good day out and for making me smile and all before my mid morning coffee ..
Thanks a lot, Neville. Really appreciate your comments. We were up in the Lakes the other weekend, close to, but not quite, where Wordsworth was.. I thought I'd write about being ALMOST where the great poets were. 🙂 Cheers, Tom.
