Came that day yet again!
I was working for local government,
Working in the Housing Department
At a time when computing started,
I was looking after them,
A very new way of work at the time.
As in local government
They re-organised every nine months,
This time I was left out,
Left out of a job.
I went to my manager
And he said not to worry
A position will be found.
So I just said to him,
“What about the computer?”
He looked at me in astonishment,
“Bloody Hell!” he said,
“I forgot about them!”
That’s how new computing was
When I first got into it at work
All those many years ago.

- Comment from author about the poem: Doggerel Dave asked me to give more episodes of my life, this is one of them. At the time computing in Local Government was very new. I got into it very early on and ended up working for a computer software company until I retired. This is a true story.

Did you say nice things to your computer?
Some at my workplace did not always say nice things to the photocopier, then it played up! Probably cos we over-used it, but that's no reason to kick it (well, almost. lol).
One of my colleagues found out why computers are called hardware that use software, he threw his computer against a wall and the sound it made showed it was hardware. LOL

Let's have more of them Andy - I wager you could mine anecdotes from your past for the rest of time (our time, not eternity) if you got the recollection juices flowing......
I probably could Dave so I will do some more over time.

That comment 'One of my colleagues....' deserves a witty verse or two all of its own - definitely a fave then..... LOL already.
I too remember those days. I was doing punch cards and you had to be very careful not to knock over the stack or drop the box on the floor or you would have to spend hours sorting them back out,
So true soren, those pinch cards could be a menace.

Yeh - Reorganisation was the driving force here during my working life, Andy. One Govt Dept changed it's name four times in the two years I worked there.....
That's the problem with many organisations Dave.

While I never worked on computers, Ihowever I did start out doing manual key punch cards fed into a computer. They had to be checked by a second person so there would be no mistakes. Talk about time consuming. I think those are probably in a museum somewhere, that is if anyone even remembers them. Ah, the good old days. A very nostalgic story my friend.
I started out in analytical chemistry and one day my brother and I went to the Science Museum in London to see a Star Trek exhibition and then we went round the museum, in one area they had laboratories laid out and in one of them I saw chemistry machines that I had used.

It makes you wonder how things can change so much in what seems so little time.
Excellent work.
Thank you Thomas.

lol unfortunately in the High-tech world we have to rely on them, however we really shouldn't. 🌹
Very true Teddy.
