Three Poppies

Neville

Three Poppies

Here,

where they once

stood,

in hundreds

of thousands ..

Each

seemingly solid,

firmly

rooted and erect ..

Still proud

and mostly

smiling or waving ..

Today,

I found only three

and each one

of them holding

their heads

bent and bowed low ..

  • Comment from author about the poem: I usually reserve such posts for around November time so as to pay my respects and remember all those that perished during WW1 .. but with everything that's going on in the world today, it dawned on me, for some of us, there may not be a November 🤍

    Good write N.
Well, I chose an Easter tune for this month, July! I'm sure it's Easter next week, yes?
Ahh, 3 - the same figure as the number of my brain cells! lol.

Good to see you are reasonably well orientated for time, place and rodent & that your insight is presently intact .. Neville

What to do, if my brain cells go on holiday?!

Beautifully symbolic, Neville. The general stupidities which caused the event those poppies commemorate have not disappeared. November will come, but it will be a fair bugger. The rest of the poppies died of disappointment.

Thanks for your visit, appreciation & insight Dave .. Neville

With respect to November, who do you think may have popped off by then? Look'in at me?

Great metaphor Neville. The poem by John McCrae and Flanders Fields comes to mind. A most horrific war now mostly forgotten. I would be surprised if there were even three heads left from that long ago war. My grandfather served in that war. Great write Neville

Thank you sorenbarrett I am again most grateful to you for stopping by and for your very well reasoned review ..
I personally hope that WW1 is never forgotten & here in England Armistice Day is always remembered on the 11th November .. furthermore, I know for a fact every evening since the Menin Gate in Ypres Belgium was completed not too long after hostilities ceased, the Last Post is played and all traffic is stopped as a mark of respect .. The last of the fighting Tommie's was Harry Patch who lived until his death aged one hundred and eleven years in the County of Somerset where I also live ..

                  Thanks again, Neville

I haven’t seen a field of poppies for many years. Last time in a field beside the Thames in Oxford, when the sky was gun metal grey. It was a most appropriate and solemn moment to remember our war dead. These days I am more likely to see little clumps of poppies beside the country roads near home. Whenever I see poppies, I only have thoughts of the sacrifice others have made for my freedom. I’m not sure these days everyone thinks the same, though you clearly do. A must poignant write Neville.

Thank you Cassie, I am glad we seem to think similarly. Neville

It seems that sadly our world has become a war zone, not just on a field of battle, but in the minds of many who equate power with violence. A symbol of remembrance, the poppy stands in defiance, though it's head may droop, it does not give in. This poem is a beautiful tribute to those who sacrificed, so well done my friend!
