Not absent - still here!

I don’t suffer from patriotism -
One less medication I have to take.
My Mum and Dad had a sexual coupling
On British soil - did that a patriot make
Of me when I had no say in it at all?

Sir Orchi NS here - you found that Prodigal son yet? He may have come home by now!
That's your job matey Them two humpsters aren't patriotic, are they?
You got the gene of misery and agro though 🤣 lol
Like to clarify, Teddy? LOL
I did lol
My misery (if any) might come from the fact that patriotism has been the motivation behind more wars than I care to count. There ain't nothing funny about that (no lols or LOLs awarded here)..
Ok Dave lol it still makes me chuckle
Thanks for responding yet again, Teddy. It would have given me a chance to expand my point of view. But it was time for bed, and when I woke our two friends below gave me that chance anyway.😊
Dave I think that patriotism should begin with oneself. "To thine own self be true" Yea Dave I'm with you.
So not patriotic, Soren?
(Not totally clear......)
I’m gonna upset the apple cart here because every bone in my body is patriotic 😂. I thought it was religion that caused all the wars? I’m laughing at what Teddy said to you 😂. Has she got you summed up Dave?
Hey - hello Cassie. Good to see you don’t shy away from big topics you consider important.
From my POV you are sticking your head so far in the sand that at any moment it will pop up in Australia and we will be able to have a proper conversation…
Dr. Johnson had much insight when he said, "Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel".
You could not possibly believe religion was the cause of all wars???? WW1, WW2 and all subsequent conflicts??? Oh please….
And yes – (I am not avoiding any part of your post) Teddy has some partial insight into the way I work, though I don’t overly care for her terminology. But then I’ve never made any secret of the fact that I enjoy brisk debate and have labelled myself a contrarian.😊
Ha ha. I guess I am a scoundrel then as well as possessing skills of exaggeration. Ok, the last two wars weren’t based on religion, but plenty of others have been in history. I would have enjoyed a trip to Australia, but only managed to half bury myself. You know I reckon Teddy has got you sussed. 😂 Have a happy weekend. If you were a woman you would be a contrary Mary.
Hello Cassie
Five out of ten as a conciliatory gesture. And that’s not a bad mark considering you tried, and most don’t.. I’m not going to continue a silly argument about how many wars were/are religious.
No need to refer to Teddy or any other for a character assessment of me. I repeat: I do that very well myself –

Insight or what?
Oh David lighten up mate. 🤣
Teddy - You know it's 'Dave'. I try to confine my id; if I let it roam free we might all be in trouble....🙃
Excellent write
Thanks.
You're welcome
OK, Dave, no fealty to anything? I agree that patriotism should only be used in terms of survival, but one can still love one's country. It's OK to enjoy the freedom one has. Stirring the pot again, hey? - Phil A.
Stirring the pot? Yes – I do when it needs to be stirred.
Patriotism has two brothers: Nationalism and Jingoism. Together they form a triad, and really cannot be separated.
But OK, supposing patriotism were merely just a love of country what exactly am I loving? (equally applicable to my two countries, UK and Australia) The land (buggered up by over development)? It’s people, all of ‘em (a motley crew at best)? It’s Governance (oh do me a favour)?...and so on.
As for fealty, King and Country or JFK’s famous ‘Ask not’ speech you can forget all three for my money. They are just not a part of my mindset.
‘See you next time, Phil.😊
Heavy. Makes one wonder what does make a patriot? Nice work.
Societal mores and norms which apply a subtle form of brain washing.
Thanks for the read.
You have found your own way in life Dave and that is all life needs.
Andy
Whose life Andy? The lives or all those men who toddled off to the trenches in WW1?
and would probably result in time out .. or worse .. okay let's say it was hermit crab .. neither of your folks were tho were they .. Got'cha .. N
This a combo answer...Two for the price of one??
A deep, evocative
and thought
provoking write! 🤔
I'll have to
sleep 😴 on this
one tonight! 🌗
Best regards ✌️ Thad
That's OK Thad, sleep on it then and by all means come back....
My write includes all the responses down the line o'course ...might need an afternoon nap after all that as well🙃😊
Not much less as riding a pumpkin making us Cinderella! I’d say patriotic in the sense of values rather than political stance or motive- probably responds as well to your recent comment/query on another poem of mine 🙂👍🏻
Yeh, the main issue, taking into account the responses I've made above, remains that I did not ask to be born who or where I was, and thus feel no gratitude towards any nation state or similar entity.
I feel that each one should make their choice and not have it thrust upon them by any means available, notional or invented.
Implied criticism? As I argue somewhere above, there's a connection between patriotism, nationalism and jingoism with even a stronger connection to war. Dangerous stuff.
Who is thrusting what on whom, BTW?
Oh, that— tradition, general opinion, peer pressure, the powers that be, what’s expected on the general public, John Doe, typical bystander. Sorry, if I wasn’t being clear, long and late shifts at work knackered and sleepy here.
Ok then - gotta make allowance for poor old wage slaves and realise we ain't all Gentlemen of Leisure....😊
What a poem!!! I am not sure whether to say loved it, or adored it etc. But I know for sure it shook me to the core!
Thanks. Not the reason I suggested you visit here - merely to warn you that in that topic you raised and as demonstrated by the response to my poem and the debate that followed, you are in the middle of muddled thinking....
I am very glad that you did. I understood that I could be in a muddle but I have faith in tbe safety of being unknown 😊.
As far as I can tell It's not you who are in the muddle......
