The All-Inclusive Breakfast

Tom Dylan

Notice of absence from Tom Dylan
Sorry if there is a delay in replying or if I'm away for short periods. Sometimes life gets in the way. As John Lennon says, life is what happens while you're busy making other plans.

Once they have put their beach towels out

on just the right sun loungers

in that exact spot by the pool,

they rush inside to the all-inclusive breakfast.

The serious business and the jostling

in the hotel dining room

reminds me of going through airport security.

I like a cup of tea but have never

queued post-office style

for my morning brew.

They huddle in silent concentration

around the toast-machine

watching their particular slice

going round, while also eyeing

other diners in case they push in

or try to pinch their toast.

I sit at a table nursing a hangover

from last night’s cerveza,

the clattering of cutlery

jangling through my head.

Maybe I’ll try again tomorrow

I tell myself before retreating

back to the cool hush of my room.

A few days later an octogenarian

from Yorkshire shows me the trick with the toast.

You put it on one side and then the other.

This poem teems with the clatter of a busy morning breakfast hotel style. The bustle of impatient diners is monitored by the narrator awaiting his meal. I feel that I have been there so well captured in words.

Thanks a lot for your comments, Soren. There was so much going on, I had to try and get it down. And it was all such a serious business. 🙂 Thanks again, Tom.

That's what so fun about aka life: people in their foolish, selfish way of being, so unconsciously self-absorbed. This is hilarious! I couldn't help laughing aloud. Beautifully rendered with superb imagery and a none too subtle humorous poignancy jostling with that haunting boredom which never fails to reign supreme.i love it! Thank you so much for sharing.

Honestly, it was too good an opportunity to resist. I had to write about it. It was all so serious. I was sitting there thinking, this is a bit of breakfast, and you guys are on your holidays for goodness sake, everyone needs to chill out a little. Thanks as always for your comments. Really appreciated.

I have my reservations about organised mass tourism which I may have versified or at least commented on way back when.... but none crystalizes my feelings better than several or more of the breakfast experiences you vividly describe, Tom.

                  • Tom Dylan

Honestly, Dave, it was shocking. I was sitting there slightly hungover, thinking, what are you all doing?? Thanks for your comments, mate. Cheers, Tom.

Oh! I can picture myself with the family last December in Tenerife! Thanks for the imagery - hilariously accurate.

Thanks a lot for your comments, Kerry. I was sitting there surrounded by all the carnage, and thought, I have to write about this. 🙂 Cheers, Tom.

i can visualize and empathize - believe me - the trick is to go early or late - not at the rush hour

Oh yes! That is what we did. We would get up early and head down, then we'd go back up to the room when it got mad busy. 🙂 Thanks for your comments.
