A candle made; to burn so bright
trembled in the wind,
did not know; if it was right
for flame; is ancient sin,
its waxy worth; spilt on floor
crying; when it bled,
wearing all its achy sores
wishing it was dead,
lo’ when the gale broke,
flickers; turned so still,
reflective thought; began to choke
to stoke; a hearty will,
thus; chose to keep ablaze;
until a snuffer comes,
sparkled true; in such dark days
surrounded by its crumbs,
painfully; it dwindled down
where silent tears did drain,
the heat on top; was hollow crown
hence; drowned in heavy rain,
then; a whisper; came from wick; to
resurrect some hope,
next; there came; a timely trick
which reignited cope,
autumn years; did gleam,
with less dark-talk emotion,
just a joyous little dream
not making a commotion,
so; when it does extinguish,
no questions; will it ask, it
simply will distinguish:
I am, a happy flash!

- Comment from author about the poem: As some of the more perceptive of you can see, it is October, (Samhain season), and I haven’t yet posted anything remotely Halloweenish. It has been a very trying year for me personally, and health wise, but I still have written things. The pieces I have penned have either been homages to ones who have sadly passed away, little challenges of interest, some songs, but mostly reflective stuff, which as a result, read back as harsh self-deprecations. 2020 pales in comparison to 2024, which has been an agony for me, to which, I thank all my family and friends for their ongoing support, I love you all! With that said, on this Samhain season, instead of “cooky spooky”, I give you this somewhat sombre poem, about the life of a candle, who had no choice in being lit, it just was. I hope that you enjoy and take something from this poem, Happy Samhain everyone, and please do stay safe everyone.

You're welcome
That light may extinguish Ben but another will always be lit.
