Tune: Supreme Sacrifice

('O valiant hearts')

John 15 v.12-17 parts

*********

There no greater love one can have than this

To lay down their life, sanctifying bliss

Lay life down for their friends, as Christ did say

And fullness of His love to us display

And in remembrances of battles, wars

Troubles and conflicts reaching to the shores

Of this earthly land, King of Peace, your peace

Send to us, kingdom that shall never cease

We now your friends if we do you obey

Obeying your command to love, you say

Shown in many ways here in deed and word

Your voice, the good Shepherd, we true have heard

You the sacrifice, offering for our sins

In you we trust, and so new life begins

Give us grace to in your service down lay

Our lives, self deny, follow in your way

  • Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 10.10.10.10. A hymn not sung so much lately. One verse, omitted in the clip, mentions 'lesser Calvaries' which makes the hymn unacceptable to some people.

Thanks T. One of my usual genres is 'hymn-poems' though I've rather dried up on it recently.

LEST WE FORGET all subsequent wars, the casualties on all sides, (both civilian as well as military) and the stupidity of the politicians and the military industrial complex which inflicted it all.
